Arsene Wenger probably knows Sol better than you or I if we’re honest

To my mind the fairly simple reality is this:

Arsene Wenger is a football manager of a Premier League side, he knows what it takes to play in the Premier Leaugue, he knows Sol Campbell, he has watched Sol Campbell for however many months, he knows we need defensive cover and he reckons Sol Campbell can provide it.

I can’t really see what there is to argue with. Potential is not what we need right now. It’s one thing to buy it in attack at this stage (say like Reyes was), in the hope the new signing may pop up with a couple of crucial goals. But in defence you want the opposite – someone who can come straight in.

Is he better than Senderos? I don’t know. But right now for whatever reason Senderos is not a viable option and we need viable options.

As for the way he left the club and the walk out against West Ham, all one can really say is that it doesn’t seem to bother anyone at the club too much. I was actually pretty sympathetic to Sol at the time and while I concede the West Ham incident was not his greatest moment, it pales into comparison with the high points.

Less we forget, his five seasons read:
- won the double.
- won the FA Cup.
- won the title unbeaten.
- won the FA Cup.
- Runners-up in the Champions League.

He also, of course, gave us one of the funniest moments ever when he signed for the club in 2001, causing utter apoplexy in N17.

This year’s signing, if confirmed, would probably rank as Arsene’s second most surprising. The first, surely, was Sol the last time around. It’s one of those where you remember where you were when you heard it.

If this doesn’t work, people will say “I told you so”. But I’m not really sure that in terms of buying a central defender, Arsene could have found anyone who could perform much better between now and May.
