Stay or go, Cesc’s desire to leave must be a massive wake-up call
I SUPPOSE I should start by saying to those who think it’s all made up that I do believe the crux of the reports about Cesc’s desire to leave. Read between the lines on these things, look at who is reporting it and what they are saying and you can usually tell pretty quickly whether there is anything in it.
There is.
The next thing to say is that we knew that at some point Cesc would want to leave. How many of us have argued it out over a pint whether it would be age 22, 23, 24 or 25? I always thought 24, but there you go. We know too that there were movements on this front last summer. And it is also true that the lure of playing in the current Barca side would be great for any footballer, let alone one brought up less than an hour’s drive north up the coast from the Nou Camp.
So perhaps we should be neither surprised nor too upset.
And yet had you asked me two months ago, I’d have said the odds on him leaving this summer were very low. We appeared to be a side finally shaking free so many of our insecurities and one destined for great things – if not in the season just past then very shortly. For the captain to have departed in such circumstances would have amounted to desertion in my book.
But now it feels different. To me it feels as if we’re as far from winning a trophy as we have ever been in this barren period. That shocking end to the season – where at Wigan Arsenal staged arguably the single most unlikely collapse in Premier League history – must have been hard to watch for a player who had given his all and more for so long and now was seeing those hopes die in a plume of disinterest from a manager and players who appeared to have given up the chase far too early on.
Whereas for nine months Cesc Fabregas had fought and fought and fought every time he’d played, others no longer were and I defy anyone to say that there is not every chance of the same scenario being played out season after season.
So I can sympathise, though it is worth adding a part of me wonders why when the captain got injured he apparently proceeded to spend so much of the remainder of the season back in Spain. Not because it gave Barca a chance to seduce him with sweet nothings because that could have happened any time anywhere. But because at that time of the season his presence around the training ground and at games would have been an inspiring one. I don’t for a second begrudge him returning to Spain for a little while and I know it’s common practice among the players.
It’s just that were I the boss, I’d do it a little differently.
Whether he leaves or not will define whether this is a hammer, potentially fatal blow to Arsene Wenger or whether it is hopefully a massive jolt to the system.
If he does go, we are losing the embodiment of our entire project. It would be hugely symbolic. I’d struggle to see where we could really go from there and while I’m not normally a fan of a gung-ho approach in the transfer market, I think it would be one time when seriously big signings would be needed to stop us suffering the equivalent of the post Alonso era season Liverpool have just been through.
I do hope we can convince him to stay and that it acts as a massive wake-up call. In a sense I admire Cesc’s wish to go on and better himself elsewhere and wonder if over the years the England national team might have benefited from having a few more players who were prepared to take the plunge and change club, away from their comfort zone. Of course whereas the likes of Terry, Gerrard and Lampard would be leaving their home cities, Cesc would actually be returning home. But just as they have stayed at Chelsea and Liverpool for so long, the easy option for Cesc would be to stay at Arsenal rather than risk exposure at Barca.
So while I admire his aspiration, I also don’t think him being convinced to stay one more year would show a lack of ambition on his part. He is, after all, only 23.
We wait to see how it all plays out but whatever happens, this should act as a serious wake-up call.
Your right man, crux ++++

If he goes, atleast we have a plan B that could replace his lost.
Cesc is the heart of arsenal, they need him!
