AND so our pathetic end to the season continues.
That, against all the odds, the battle for third could still go to the final day is a damning indictment of the way we gave up on the battle for first. Even after losing at the Lane, the gap between us and Spurs was far greater than the one between us and Chelsea. And yet look which one is still alive.
Like Colin Hendry in the ESPN studio, I don’t think Lucasz Fabianski appears up to it as a keeper right now. Unlike the woeful Hendry, my brain is capable of distinguishing between that thought in the previous sentence and the fact he was very, very clearly fouled for the first goal.
The “you can’t even touch a keeper nowadays” brigade tend to miss the very important point that as far as goalkeepers are concerned the slightest touch is only needed to completely change a perfectly well timed jump into one that misses the ball entirely.
As I said, a clear foul. The second came when Dunn pushed Sol and he fell into an already flapping Fabianski. My thought? Perhaps a foul but Sol’s big enough that he shouldn’t have been moved by Dunn.
But all that aside, we just weren’t good enough. We just seem to have given up for the season. Nobody seems to get particularly bothered. Wenger fumes over something or other. The players just generally keep their heads down and the season ticket renewal notices drop into inboxes.
A season that for so long was so positive is ending on a very downbeat note. Fulham on Sunday offers one last chance to end on a positive note.
And one last chance to remind ourselves of how to put a team to bed. It’s half a league season and another calendar year since we went to Portsmouth and did just that.
