Thoughts on Joe Cole

WHAT’S going on with Joe Cole?

Reports conflict. Blogs report in good faith from people they rightly trust that a deal is in the bag. Some papers claim a deal is very likely and over on this site a man who until not that long ago earned his corn reporting football for the London Evening Standard reckons it is done too.

But it is notable too that in many other places the story is not being written. John Cross in the Mirror doesn’t buy it and I don’t remember seeing the Sun and the Mail touch it. The way virtually the same story appeared in around four of the Sunday papers suggested to me someone deliberately trying to put out something, instead of a casual leak. Who would do that? My general guiding rule on these occasions is always to assume Harry Redknapp pulling strings somewhere.

And if ever there was a Harry Redknapp type signing, then surely he is it.

As for the player, we’d be mad not to snap him up. Sure, we’ve got Nasri, Rosicky and Arshavin. But which of them can claim to be experienced, proven in the Premier League over the years and dare I say it, local. The answer is none. I’m not saying he’s better than all of them all of the time, but I do think he’d add to our squad.

And he is a player who has played all his life in the Premier League, won titles in the Premier League and spent much of his childhood living just a couple of miles from Highbury. That’s not saying British is better – just that knowing the lie of the land is no bad thing.

Growing up where I did when I did such was the hype around Cole that people considered it as a badge honour to simply have played with someone who had played on the same pitch as Joe Cole. Being, frankly, fairly shit, I think my claim extended to having a brother who had played with someone who had played on the same pitch as Joe Cole. But there you go.

He never has quite become the second coming of Pele that in those days he was meant to. But a fine player and fine signing he would be. Do it Arsene.

I’ll try to write a bit about the World Cup. Arsenal wise, I’m most looking forward to seeing how Abou Diaby performs. I reckon it might, just might, be his stage.

And finally, congrats to Edward Shelley, winner of last week’s competiton to win the new home shirt once it is released. Edward correctly identified Theo Walcott’s first goal as coming against Chelsea.

  1. You cannot achieve success in anything if you do not have confidence in yourself. Self-confidence can easily be known as the moving force that can elevate you to great heights. If you evaluate the life of happy individuals, you will learn that they have this trait.

  2. He never quits. That’s what’s good about him.
