WELCOME to the Goodplaya.com survey of the best Arsenal goals between January 1st 2000 and December 31st 2009.
Unlike one or two other surveys (not least on the official web site), I’ve gone for the unique approach of actually waiting until the end of the decade before launching mine.
In keeping with this site’s nod to the obsessives amongst us, the shortlist is more a longlist of 50 goals, drawn largely from the suggestions of Goodplaya.com readers. No doubt you will disagree with some of the entries, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
From the list, you’re not restricted to endorsing just one goal either and you can give either a bronze, silver or gold rating to different goals. The idea is to get the definitive view of Arsenal fans on their favourite goals of the decade.

Best of the lot not only because it was a stunning goal but it was so important for the team’s morale after a horrible week, has to be Thierry’s v Liverpool. 03-04

TH v Blackburn 06-07 – It’s the only goal that had everything.
• It was a counter attack
• The ball always remained under complete control
• The move was performed at pace
• It was 2 Arsenal players against a constant moving unit of 5 Blackburn players (a team known at the time as very tough tackling.
• The passing was perfect.
• It was a team goal
• The individual finish alone merits a top 50 inclusion.
• It only involved the 2 (arguably) best arsenal players over the last decade and was a show wheel for their individual strengths.
The only shame was that it wasn’t scored against Barac in the CL final. That’s (IMO) the only reason why it wouldn’t win

I’m a newcomer to the game, drawn in by my kids’ participation in youth soccer. But it was van Persie’s strike against Charlton that captured me. Sitting with my son, looking up highlights, we came across it on youtube. I was stunned by the beauty. Turned me into a gunner. I still go back and look at it often. What a goal!
Great collection there, mate. Got the powerful shots of Parlour v. Valencia, the equally powerful AND skillful of Henry v. West Ham. Love, too, the power and trajectories of the long shots by Henry v. Citeh and Flamini v. N’castle. Henry FK v. Charlton is a peach (as was his against Juve the same season (?), but I’m not gonna complain about missing goals). I’m also a succer for great passes, like the couple of Cesc’s assists to Henry on the list, esp. the ‘pool goal. Many desreving silver or higher.
As much as I love those, I’m torn between team goals (who few did better than Arsenal during the ’00s) – such as the one Vieira finishes v. Everton – and the individual skills of Bergkamp v. N’castle and Pires v. Villa, or Henry’s dribble’s v. ‘pool and v. Madrid, not to forget vP’s v. B’burn. I’m actually going to go for a combination of team passing, skill and long(ish) shot and pick Pires’ goal v. Southampton. A few quick passes, good movement, a lovely pass (Edu?) inside the left channel for Pires to finish with the loveliest of lobbed goals.

have to say i’d have kanu’s final goal in the hat trick at the bridge in there, what a finish and what a hat trick under what circumstances
also bergkamp’s versus leicester to complete his hat trick was arguably his finest ever goal for us

Both great goals however pretty sure they weren’t in the last decade. I think Berkamp was 97 or 98.
great selection, I put my fave as Vieira vs. Sp*rs in Invincibles season. Closely followed by Pires chip at Villa, Henry at Real Madrid, Henry vs. Man Utd in 2000 and of course Bergkamp Newcastle and RVP Charlton. Had totally forgotten that Flamini screamer and that awesome Kanu feint goal in Europe… I love Adebayor’s goals vs. Sp*rs and Villereal too.

Bergkamp will top the chart with that goal v Newcastle, but I’d choose Eduardo v Burnley.
Whichever goal wins needs to be truly memorable – something you haven’t seen before and something you can visualilse, without seeing a youtube clip. But loved watching them all. Thanks Goodplaya.
Wenger would choose the Nasri goal against Man United. You won’t ever see a better team goal.
ashley cole’s against villa def has to be in there, also rvp’s against villa..outrageously skillful, no one else in the league comes near that level of skill

I started following football and Arsenal very recently (08-09). Though I haven’t seen Arsenal lift any silverware (live), I love Arsenal for their philosophy, their ability to keep their heads above water (financially) and most of all for their excellent display of football.
Thanks Goodplaya for compiling this set of videos. It’s truly insightful for new followers like me to know the greatness of Arsenal over the past decade!

i can never get enough of watching the bergkamp goal against newcastle. part of me ( a very small part ) still doesn’t believe he could have meant to do that. But then I remember the man was nothing short of a genius and it all becomes real again. henry v. man u was special and rvp’s volley against charlton spectacular. nasri’s against manure from last season is also very pleasing for the incredibly controlled and patient build up leading to the killer cesc pass and sami’s cracking finish. adebayor’s goals should all be barred from the competition, tho
