It’s not been a very fun week

PLAYA RATINGS

FABIANSKI – Not great on the second goal and in no man’s land on the third. The reality is he costs us goals – 4.5

GIBBS – Recovered well from the nightmare of Tuesday night. None of the goals really came down his side and he got stuck in and had a real go – 7

KOLO – Looked disconsolate going towards the break and toiled somewhat for the rest of the afternoon. I’ve never been a great fan of the Kolo jump and I can’t help thinking a more restrained attempt to clear would have shepherded it the other side of the post. Alex also escaped him for the opener – 4.5

SILVESTRE – Didn’t get hold of Alex for the first after he floated off Kolo. Then made a nothingy attempt to block the ball for Anelka’s goal. Doesn’t really look up to it right now – 4.5

SAGNA – Not his best game. Exposed on a couple of occasions by Malouda. But did put in a very decent cross for our goal – 5.5

SONG – Got stuck in well, particularly early on. That said my spy in the upper tier bemoaned the gaps he left in front of the back four – 6.5

NASRI – Turned very easily for the second goal but then what do you expect of a winger/forward playing the anchor role? Did OK in our second half attempt to salvage something – 6.5

DIABY – The good games should be getting more frequent. Instead they are becoming rarer – 6

CESC – Looked frustrated and understandably so. I can’t help thinking playing in the hole just highlights his weaknesses. Hard to remember any moments that took your breath away. The frustration is something I’ll touch on later in the week – 6.5

THEO – A real mix. Got himself into some great positions but couldn’t finish at all. Really frustrating. With a bit more confidence he could have had a hat-trick. Still a vital outlet – 6.5

RVP – Didn’t really look comfortable up front on his own but equally was not terrible and we did create a fair bit – 6.5

BENDTNER (SUB): Not sure why it took til 59 minutes for him to replace Diaby. Interesting he got the call before Adebayor. Really mixes things up and with his improved workrate gives the opposition something to worry about. Great header for the goal. Towered above Essien, which is no mean feat – 7.5

DENILSON (SUB): Fine. Moved the ball reasonably well – 6.5

ADEBAYOR (SUB): Not all bad. There were some good moments. But the comparison between his workrate and that of Bendtner could not be more marked. And had he scored with that chance on 85 minutes it would have been 3-2 and we’d have had five minutes in which to throw everything at Chelsea in the hope of scrambling what would not have been an undeserved draw – 5.5

ARSENAL 1 CHELSEA 4
FROM GOODPLAYA AT THE EMIRATES

ON the bright side:

1) Other than finishing off our slim chance of finishing third, if something like this was going to happen, the timing was hardly bad.

2) The timing was also decent in that it showed up very clearly where our weaknesses lie. The unbeaten run – which I’d been meaning to say for a while should have been looked at as a won 14, drawn 3, lost 4 run – will no longer be able to cloud any of our deficiencies.

3) Had Chelsea got the rub of the green on Wednesday night that they got today, they’d be going to Rome.

4) We did not actually play that badly. Football can be a game of fine margins and but for some better finishing we genuinely might have won this game. We certainly opened them up time and time again.

5) Despite what you’ll read elsewhere, our attitude was actually fairly good. We came out the blocks really up for it and even at 2-0 and 3-0 and 3-1 we kept on going really. It was hard to fault the players much in that regard and the fans acknowledged as much.

On the not so bright side:

1) Our defence was an absolute shambles. Silvestre ain’t up to it, Kolo’s acceleration – once his selling point – is not what it was and with all the good will in the world, the reality is Fabianski costs goals. Don’t get me wrong, the defence is not a black and white issue: you can’t not acknowledge that at one stage this season we did not concede very many goals at all.

2) Our confidence seems far more brittle than Chelsea’s. They (and Liverpool if we’re honest) thrive in adversity. We tend to curl up and die, even if ostensibly we try hard, like we did today.

3) We played three guys (Fabregas, Diaby and Nasri) out of position. Diaby did very little on the wing, Nasri is not a holding midfielder and was turned far too easily for the second goal and Cesc looks as frustrated as I have ever seen him as an Arsenal player. It feels as if he is playing in a position that highlights his weaknesses. That can’t be a good thing really.

4) The relationship between the fans and Emmanuel Adebayor has completely broken down. It’s sad and while I think there have been some fans who have been too anxious for him to fail, he really must shoulder the majority of the blame. It’s not as if the same fans are unwilling to acknowledge effort and improvement: Nicklas Bendtner’s new semi-hero status shows as much.

5) We lost 4-1 at home to Chelsea.

Sorry for the shortness of the report. I want to wash this match from my system asap.

  1. stop saying sack the manager ya cunts. it the player fault in all this. aw has done all his best for his team to prepare fo this match but its the players who r dissapointing. fabianshitty shuld never be allowed in a big game again until hes experienced enough

  2. two home games in a week: 2 goals scored with 7 conceded.
    is there any stronger evidence for wenger that sylvestre or fabianski (and maybe even toure, MAYBE) aren’t good enough or do weed need another beating from united next saturday?

  3. mr wenger I hope you don’t sleep because of your conscious, if you have no idea arsenal fans are killing themself because they are true fans of arsenal, we deserve better. Sell ade,bendner,eboe,diaby . If you won’t buy then your conscious

  4. How can it not be Arsene’s fault ? He picks the squad, he trains the squad, he dictates the tactics, he picks the team (often playing players out of position) and he controls the substitutions. If he chooses to field players who don’t put the effort in for the club then it is still his responsibility. Amazing view.

  5. Adebayors blatant dive said it all, Thierry Henry would have scored easily with a chip.
    I hope Milan refresh their ridiculously high 25m-bid so that we can load him off…

  6. Just face facts this team just were not good enough today or this season.Loyalty is all well and good but its time to face facts,Arsenes magic or whatever he had, has gone.Sometimes this just happens it cant always be explained away.However the building and more importantly the financing of the new stadium has left us woefully short of funds to buy what we need.This coincides with a Manchester city who appear to have a vast ammount of money, and TOTTENHAM WHO WILL BE BUILDING THEIR OWN stadium soon. This being done after they have strengthened their squad and at a time when the building/construction industry are struggling,wich means they will get a good deal from an industry that is desperate for the business.Aston villa have had a reasonable season as have Everton.How sure can we be of struggling into fourth[consolation]place next season.There will be Arsenal fans who disagree with me ,but I believe we are going backwards slowly but surely.Without champions league money we are up shit creek without a paddle.The stadium was a gamble but also a millstone for years to come and it may now be about to blow up in our faces.Look at the thousands of fans leaving early the other night against Man utd,do you think these fans will still be at the games in numbers big enough to sustain the stadium repayments when, not if we do not qualify for champions league some time in near future.

  7. Thought it was a good game if Theo has his shooting boots on we would have won at a canter. It seems to me Wenger is trying to manipulate the team. Diaby needs to go on loan or be sold to get a run in a team to grow as a player. Van Persie stuggles as a loan forward we all know this. Song was to lathargic in midfield. how does the goalkeeper get experience without playing? Gibbs was outstanding though. The team fought until the final whistle you can’t ask for more in what was essentially a dead/pointless game

  8. sack the manager. Simple. It is his fault. He bought the load of shite and he ahs stuck by it. Everyone at the beginning at the season said we need a GK, DM and CB and we are all proved right. Oh and teh cunt on front should go. So, sorry to be right but we have won nothing, come close to winnig nothing are shite. Only Wenger had teh power to make change and he won’t. Fuck Off Wenger I say.

  9. we would of clearly won the match if Arshavin wasnt ill and also if we put away our chances, the worrying thing was how defelated the players became after we conceded. And we all want Ade gone but I think V.persie will give us trouble this summer

  10. Great to see all the mongs come out of the woodwork with the “SACK THE BOSS!” tripe. Having said that, there’s serious work to be done this summer. Defensively we are dire, and it’s painfully obvious to all and sundry that a partner for Cesc is required. Personally I don’t understand the boo’ing of Adebayor and the general hatred of him. The fact is, he’s a fast, powerful, tall striker who can score goals (when he learns the offside rule). He’s going to be hard to replace if we sell. Wenger likes the idea of a tall striker, and there aren’t many around with Ade’s attributes.

    The likes of Denilson, Diaby, Bendtner and Song have all played too much football this year. The reality is, they should be squad players. The amount of starts they have made this season is really throwing them in at the deep end, and unfortunately the inconsistencies they show are because of this.

    Fingers crossed Wenger has seen the impact of a quality, experienced player like Arshavin and aims for more of the same this summer.

  11. wengers egotisticall bullshit.
    he is living on his past,
    has a total wenger team ever won anything ?

  12. Adebayor as a player has made no sense to me this season, he’s our main aerial threat yet he consistently drifts wide to no effect, leaving the penalty area vacant, I just get the impression he has delusions of Henry grandeur (wouldn’t be the first time, pay rise being the first). His consistently being offside is draining to watch. His finishing was inconsistent last season but has gone well and truly backwards this season (touch as well). People accuse RVP of slowing down play, I don’t see that, I think he’s absolute class, but I definitely see Adebayor slow play down. Granted his ability to hold the ball up is generally (although not when it has really mattered) excellent, but that doesn’t make him a great striker, it puts him in the same bracket as the likes of Heskey. I think its worth taking a step back and looking at who has lead the Arsenal line under Wenger, Adebayor doesn’t cut it.

    The relationship between the fans and Adebayor hasn’t broken down because of his performances, they have merely exasipated the problem he created for himself last summer, by showing himself to be a mercenary, and disloyal. I have been impressed how the fans have tried to give him the benefit of the doubt this season, but there’s no hiding how much we all dislike him deep down, and recent performances have brought it to the surface. I want to see the back of him, I heard he was booed at the stadium today, quite right too. Booing a player for a bad performance crosses the line (although it has transformed Eboue) but booing a player for showing such disrespect for the club and the Boss is how it should be. My only concern is that his potential suitors will have been put off by this season’s display.

    Finally, it dismays me to see comments stating Wenger should go. He has made big mistakes this season and last summer, and it’s right we shouldn’t keep judging him for what he has achieved for us in the past. But if there’s anyone who can get us out of this it’s Arsene. Lumping this squad of youngsters with a new coach would destroy the squad and kiss goodbye to players like Fabregas and Van Persie.

  13. Someone mentioned Theo did not wear his shooting boots? Ask ourselves, since when Theo really could finish off opponent, how often? How about his decision making? How he pick his options? How he excute his options? Yes he is speedy, how often do you guys see him speed past defender and score a goal? No end product, no football brain, no vision. But because he is English, we would like to believe he is great. To me, he is just a decent player. Just watch how Arsarvin plays, look at how he pick his options, how he execute his options, he make the whole bunch of players look so ordinary. Diaby and Silvestre are not worth mentioning, as long as they play, we will not win games.

  14. Fanner – I agree that Walcott is lacking in certain departments but he is only 21, you site Arshavin as an example of what to expect from a winger, but Arshavin is 27 and was himself a late developer in the game. Walcott’s no Leonel Messi but he is showing steady improvement and has shown that at the highest level he can change a game. Injuries to his shoulder have hampered him but they shouldn’t bother him next season since he’s had operations on both. If anything Walcott falls into the same category as the likes of Denilson, in that Wenger is too reliant on them, they should be under-studies rather than first team regulars. I think we’ll see great things from Theo next season.

  15. Diaby don’t deserve 6 rating. He was the poorest on the field apart from Fabianski. I think Diaby don’t fit into Arsenal set up and must be sold.

    Gibbs was my best player and should have had 8. We really have a future England left back on our hands.

    Does Arsene still knows? He’s failing big time.

  16. Vicky Crescit

    Today was summed up for me by an incident late in the second half, where Toure ran to stop the ball going out for a corner and then stood by it, watching it dribble over the line for a corner. Pathetic. Apart from bringing in a few decent defenders, we desperately need to get one of the old back 4/5 in to do some defensive coaching. Tony Adams is not too busy right now!

  17. WE R THE BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD. see we are the only team that never gets the words ” injury hit ” in our previews or match reports. when u think of us being frustrated at not beating a fully fit chelsea team or united minus clichy gallas rosiSICKy arshavin eduardo (almunia) and the press goes all ‘wenger has lost it’ i tend to wonder? get these players on lengthy injuries and tell me the gap. gallas vidic, clichy evra, theo ronaldo, fab carrick, rosisicky gigs, eduardo ronney, and with the one month injuries to nasri park, ade berbartv, van teves eboue nani and tell me if sir alex would have lost it? am so sick of the press n some unrealistic fans. NOW THATS 90% of the gap. in my opinion with the other 10% a CDM who utd dont have/need and a CB. or to be realistic if ronaldo got an eduardo or worse a rosisicky, would people realise that ronney doesn’t score enough? someone give me their sums this season ronney + bbtov+teves as compared to ade + RVP + bendtner well we just need a ronaldo

  18. if Adebayor had decided to shoot rather than dive it may have been 3-2 with 5 minutes to go – could have been interesting. That said, we are 4th and that’s as good as we are right now. Still, we’re easily top 10 in Europe if not top 5 (very few non-Prem teams would beat us, maybe Inter and Barca)/ By necessity, the younger players have had good experience this year and I think AW should have seen enough now to know who will make it and who won’t.
    Diaby: Needs be be sold or go on loan – seems to have gone backwards
    Song: improved steadily, should stay. A good CM and CB, but if we’re to compete with the top 3, should he be in the team (i.e. starting). Definite as a strong squad player.
    Denilson: I’m not sure. He’s had ~50 games, does ok and is busy. But seems to lack physical strength. Younger than Diaby so may improve (but Diaby has not)
    Bendtner: Has improved and has almost equalled RVP and EA in scoring. Should stay. (Adebayor should probably go. We may have missed on the big transfer fee though. His value must surely have decreased.)
    Gibbs: I think he should go on loan. Would like to see him in the prem with a lesser team to see how he does.
    Djourou: I would have liked to see him today. Skilful but may be a little soft. I would keep him (Silvestre should go). But if we can get someone like Hangeland, and Djourou is part of a swap deal, then that’s fine by me.
    Ramsey: Look forward to seeing more (especially if Diaby goes)
    Vela: Some good cameos, time to step up.
    Nasri: Doesn’t seem like one of the younger ones. Good first season. Needs to attack defenders more and penetrate more. But mainly improve his defense.
    Walcott: Has improved in the physical stuff. Seems to be able to hold the ball better in tight situations. Shooting needs to improve.

    Overall, we’re really in the same boat as last year. Need a strong CB and CM. Up front, I’m hoping to see combos of Arshavin, RVP, Eduardo, Bendtner and Vela.

  19. forever gunner

    AW is deluding himself and the fans by saying Arsenal have gone forward. I’m afraid he is trying to destroy Arsenal slowly thru his numerous experiments with kids.Since 2004,his major signings have been RVP,Eduardo and Ashvin.
    Before the start of the season cries were made for investments with established players not wc promising kids who will ,hopelessly,not hopefully deliver in two years time. But our beloved manager true to his style opted for kids.
    His do it my way and nothing else is in great danger of alienating himself from the fans. He talks about financial doping of other clubs. But does anybody bother?the red faced cunt is winning trophy after trophy year in and year out.His employers don;t bother.Yes it could lead to ruin if it doesn’t work like Leeds.
    I’m afarid if this goes on for a few more season the ES will be a white elephant thanks to AW .A great manager must learn to eat humple pie and anticipate changes. Otherwise his obstinacy will cause he and the club to fade away. Before that happens hopefully the directors will take the necessary action to save the club from one mans delusion.

  22. check this out…he think ade was outstanding…http://goal.com/en/news/1717/editorial/2009/05/08/1253560/pools-pundit-tony-cascarino-bored-with-arsenals-potential

  23. sherif attia

    I don’t believe we need any attacking midfielders, not strikers:

    if we compare goals scored:
    manU’s = 65
    Arsenal = 64
    chelsea = 63
    Only liverpool was able to have a big margin with 72 goals.

    Does any body says that manU needs attackers? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    On the other hand side, our disaster is on defense:

    if we look at goals scored against:

    manU = 23
    liverpool = 26
    chelsea = 22
    arsenal = 36 :s
    FULHAM = 32 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    and everton = 36

    I understand if we have world class defenders this would give confidence and strength to whole team. Specially -> The goalkeeper (and thus we won’t need a world class goalkeeper) and to the midfield -> (we can expect better performance from the likes of denilson, song, diaby and of course the whole midfield)

  24. f4phantomphreak

    Why is everyone clammering about buying this player or that player, you know AW doesn’t buy big expensive players for the most part, albeit Arsh was the exception but he was cheap for the quality. On the other hand I don’t disagree that this current squad needs some tinkering, no ’bout a doubt it!!! There is one player that irks me and thats Walcott, for all I see of him is speed, nothing else… I hear wait till next season he’ll come through, that was the exact samething everyone was saying last summer, now again everyone is saying wait till next season he’ll come good he’s only 21, then 22, 23 etc…..Anyway I’m NOT one for calling for AW’s head, he has earned the right to put it right, but how long, well thats for another day…

  25. f4phanton,

    Arshavin saved our fourth spot, we need more of him. Denilson, Diaby, Eboue absolute shite

  26. Saint Dennis

    Amazingly, (or maybe not) yesterday was Bacary Sagnas first assist this season.

  27. Overall, we’re really in the same boat as last year. Need a strong CB and CM. Up front, I’m hoping to see combos of Arshavin, RVP, Eduardo, Bendtner and Vela.
    ———————————

    Exactly, the problem this season was of Wenger’s doing, Everyone knew that we needed strength in the DM and CB positions. The good thing is that Wenger has acknowledged his folly and has had more than enough time to identify solutions.

    The only player I would sell is Diaby. Ade’s value has been severely reduced, but I am sure the emergence of Bendtner coupled with the return of Eduardo will give him the kick up his behind he needs.

  28. In reply to Saint Dennis

    I read on a blog (maybe this one) that neither Clichy or Sagana had set up goal, and had put in the most crossess out of any prem player. They are both cleary good players but this is a problem.

  29. ice_man, I’m a little surprised by that comment (I knew it would be a low figure, but wasn’t expecting a zero….) but many of the crosses have been reasonable. It’s just that adebarndoor isn’t in the box. He’s usually still wandering in from the wing or taking up a midfielders position on the edge of the box (assuming that the play hadn’t already been stopped by him being off-side.) He’s been soooooo lazy this year….

  30. indgunner, the guy thought Adebayor was out “standing” while others were out “running”. He didn’t think Ade was actually outstanding.

    But yes, improvements must be made. Although I disagree with most of what sysuser said.

  31. sysuser

    liked that analysis! i agree, although i think song could definitely be 2nd choice DM, haha.

    and, maybe rosicky should be higher up your list if fit. the guy’s a magician and a bit older too.

    quality blog, this. lots of thoughtful comments…

  32. In reply to ice man -

    That is quite disturbing, and something that should concern the manager. Sagna and Clichy are very good defensively, but their inability this season to land a proper cross needs rectifying and it is or should be considered a major problem at the club – at the same level as bringing in a new CM and CD.

  33. Anotrher item for the bright side: there was no gloating Jose Mourinho accusing voyeur Arsene Wenger of going into the ref’s changing room at half time.

  34. arsenals shit i told u u wont beat us. u lot havent been the same since the great flamini left. i hear arsene wants to sign him but why the hell wuld he leave ac milan for primitive club like arsenal

  35. I actually thought it was a pretty good performance from the front 6 on Saturday and from the crowd. I would describe the set-up as Barcelona-esque. And it worked. Arsenal flowed from the first moment. But for some immature finishing, the game would’ve been over before Chelsea even got into it. If Arshavin or Vela plays, a goal gets scored somewhere in there. All the attack needed was one clinical finisher. It was otherwise powerful.

    The crowd was great too. It had the feeling of a real redemption for the disappointment of Tuesday. And then it all went wrong.

    Chelsea scored on one of its first (and second) chances. Fabianski is a real disaster in goal. The team has no belief in him and he has none in himself. Silvestre is not a centre half. He should not be playing in that position. If Djourou wasn’t hurt, then Wenger takes some blame for this decision. The guy is just not right for the position. Particularly against teams like Chelsea. Toure only works when he’s next to someone who can keep him in line, whether Gallas or Almunia or both. I think this team needs one world class centre half to pair with Gallas in the summer. That assumes Gallas doesn’t leave, Senderos comes back and Toure isn’t sold. If all or any happens, you’re looking at up to three new centre backs, and they’re hard to find.

    Nasri is slack in defending and learned a lesson about playing defensive midfield in the premier league. You can’t take a break for a minute or the world class players will punish you. I still think he’s got a future in this kind of position, trading out with Cesc on going forward. He’s a top class midfielder, very versatile.

    Adebayor either needs to remember what made him great and start doing that again or needs to get sold to the highest bidder. Oh how the mighty have fallen. This is a guy who had the audacity to compare himslf to Thierry Henry. And who was once loved for his workrate. What a swing. You wonder if he can ever regain that kind of form.

    The team looks exhausted, physically and mentally, to me. I hope they cover themselves in glory on Saturday at Old Trafford, but I have my doubts. I generally agree with Wenger that this team has greatness in it and will only improve, but this year, they’ve hit their ceiling. Next year’s step forward will be interesting to watch.

  36. Form is temporary, class is permanent, and the arrogance of the nouveau riche is hilariously entertaining.

    Chelsea will never have class, only money (until Abramovic dies or loses interest at which point the whole club will go into administration with unmanageable debts).

    Enjoy the illusion of success and glamour while it lasts, Chelsea fans; but your business is unsustainable and, held together by just one man, it is perilously fragile.

    Your club might look like Jennifer Lopez, but really it’s just a slut from Essex with plastic surgery and tons of make up.

  37. Chicago Gooner

    I believe our defense is a total wreck right now. We do need a CDM and two CBs, but what really gets me is the amount of squandered chances on offense. There was tons of possession Saturday, lots of movement, but in the last 20-25 yards, Arsenal feels the need to not shoot the ball or want to walk the ball in the goal. RVP and Arshavin are the only one’s willing to let one fly. Does AW seek out players that don’t want to shoot? RVP and Arshavin are our only threats outside of the box and you look at Chelsea, Man U and Liverpool and they have tons of those threats. Ballack, Lampard, Essien, Anelka, all can and will score from 25 yards out. That type of threat opens up the field, since we don’t have it, defenses can pack it into the box and just watch us fuck up any offensive strike.
